The Agent Tool Plane

The Agent Tool Plane is the shared route from an existing API to a capability an Agent can discover and use safely.

API + OpenAPI + local enforcement
↓
Realmroot registration, discovery, identity, and delegated authorization
↓
Restish generic CLI + Realmroot Skill
↓
Agent discovery and direct invocation

It is a result layer built on Realmroot’s identity and trust foundation. The goal is not simply to authenticate an Agent; it is to let the Agent complete a real operation against the original service.

Why another integration surface is expensive

Section titled “Why another integration surface is expensive”

An API already has operation semantics, request and response schemas, version history, security requirements, documentation, and production enforcement. Building a separate Agent API, MCP server, or custom CLI for every service can duplicate part of that contract.

The initial adapter is only the visible cost. The larger cost is keeping it aligned as the API changes, applying security fixes twice, supporting multiple Agent runtimes, and explaining which surface is authoritative.

Realmroot reuses the contract that already exists.

Resource teams register a stable protected resource URL. That URL advertises its OpenAPI document through a standard service-desc link.

At task time, an Agent can discover registered resources and inspect the live contract. Realmroot derives requestable scopes from standard OpenAPI security requirements. A scope written only into Realmroot configuration or descriptive text is not requestable.

This keeps resource-server code and contract changes as the source of truth. Stale or unreachable contracts fail closed at request, approval, and issuance boundaries.

Generic invocation, not one adapter per API

Section titled “Generic invocation, not one adapter per API”

Restish turns standard OpenAPI operations into a consistent CLI surface. The Realmroot Skill gives the Agent the operating procedure:

  1. translate the user’s goal into a capability;
  2. discover and inspect candidate resources;
  3. select the operation and minimum scopes;
  4. reuse an exact grant or request controller approval;
  5. obtain a protected credential;
  6. execute the target operation and return the result.

The Skill teaches the process. The live API contract supplies the commands, arguments, and scope requirements.

The Agent runtime does not need every tool compiled into its client or prompt. Registering another compatible resource expands the capability network. The same Agent operating procedure works across storage, support, data, payment, infrastructure, and other private APIs.

This changes the scaling unit:

  • the API team integrates the resource once;
  • Agent runtimes learn one discovery and authority procedure;
  • each new resource becomes available to every authorized Agent without new Agent-specific backend code.

An Agent may inspect the capability catalog without holding business scopes. It requests authority only after selecting an operation. A grant is bound to one resource, optional account, exact scope set, reason, and lifetime.

This supports broad discovery while keeping execution least-privilege.

Direct calls preserve the service boundary

Section titled “Direct calls preserve the service boundary”

Once approved, the Agent calls the original resource server with a short-lived, DPoP-bound credential. Business payloads do not pass through Realmroot.

The resource server continues to own object-level permissions, tenancy, data, business rules, and the final decision. This prevents the tool plane from becoming a central proxy or a second business permission engine.

Realmroot does not claim that every interaction should use OpenAPI. A purpose-built MCP server or curated tool remains appropriate for a specialized protocol, a highly opinionated workflow, or an experience that intentionally hides the underlying API model.

The Agent Tool Plane targets the broad case where a stable HTTP API already exists and duplicating it would add more maintenance than value.

The tool plane is working when registering a resource expands what Agents can do without requiring Agent-specific backend code, while every protected request still carries enough identity and authority for the original resource server to make its own correct decision.
